This is probably the most common misconception I come across. A lot of people assume a Smile Makeover is just a shorthand for getting Porcelain Veneers on the front teeth. In reality, it’s a much broader concept. A Smile Makeover is a customised treatment plan that may include any combination of Porcelain Veneers, Composite Bonding, Teeth Whitening, Gum Contouring, Clear Aligners, Dental Crowns, or Dental Implants — depending entirely on what your smile needs and what you want to achieve.

Before I recommend anything, I spend real time looking at your face. That’s not a throwaway line. I spent fourteen years as a wedding photographer alongside my husband Dr Jono, and that trained eye for proportion, symmetry, and how light falls on a face is something I bring directly to smile design. I look at your lip line, your gum line, the width of your smile, the length of your teeth relative to your face, and how everything comes together when you talk and laugh naturally. The plan I build for you is shaped by all of that, not by a standard template.

What treatments are most commonly part of a Smile Makeover plan?

At The Grove Dental, the most frequently included treatments in a Smile Makeover are Porcelain Veneers for shape, colour, and coverage; Teeth Whitening as a foundation or standalone step; Composite Bonding for minor chips, gaps, or irregularities; and Gum Contouring where the gum line is uneven or shows too much when you smile. For patients with crowding or spacing issues, Clear Aligners may form part of the plan before any cosmetic work begins, because getting the alignment right first always leads to a better final result.

For patients who also have missing or damaged teeth, restorative treatments like Dental Crowns or Dental Implants may be integrated into the same plan. This is what I mean when I say a Smile Makeover is about a smile that works as beautifully as it looks — the function has to be right, not just the appearance.

How Long Does a Smile Makeover Take?

Can I get a Smile Makeover done in one appointment?

That depends entirely on what your plan involves. Some patients with minor concerns — a few chips, slight discolouration, small gaps — can achieve a meaningful improvement in just one or two appointments with Composite Bonding and Whitening. Others with more complex goals involving Porcelain Veneers across multiple teeth, Clear Aligner treatment, and Gum Contouring might be looking at a plan that unfolds over six to twelve months.

I always tell patients that this timeline is not something to be frustrated by — it’s something to feel confident about. When we sequence treatments properly and give each phase the time it needs, the result is stable, long-lasting, and genuinely suited to your face. Rushing cosmetic dentistry is one of the fastest ways to end up disappointed.

The typical Porcelain Veneer process, for example, involves a consultation and smile design appointment, a preparation appointment where a small amount of enamel is gently removed, impressions or digital scans sent to our ceramicist, and then a fitting appointment. This usually spans two to three weeks for the laboratory phase alone. Some of our same-day CEREC Crown cases can be faster, but bespoke veneer work done to the standard our patients expect takes the time it takes.

The investment varies significantly from patient to patient, because no two plans are the same. What kind of patient is a Smile Makeover actually for?

In my experience, the patients who benefit most from a Smile Makeover are those who have been sitting on a list of small frustrations for a long time — a chip here, some staining there, teeth that have shifted slightly, a gum line that feels uneven. None of these things feel urgent enough to act on alone, but together they add up to a smile that feels like it’s holding you back.
