Clear Aligners for Adults in the Hills District: What to Expect, How Long It Takes, and Whether You’re a Candidate

So You’re an Adult Thinking About Clear Aligners — Here’s What You Actually Need to Know

One of the questions I hear most often at The Grove Dental is some version of this: “Am I too old for clear aligners?” The short answer is no — not even close. I treat adults across the Hills District at every stage of life, from their late twenties through to their sixties, and many of them tell me they wish they’d looked into this years ago. If you’ve been quietly wondering whether straighter teeth are still possible for you, this post is for you.

What Are Clear Aligners and How Do They Actually Work?

How is clear aligner treatment different from traditional braces?

Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, removable trays that gradually shift your teeth into a better position over time. Each tray is worn for about one to two weeks before you move to the next one in the series, and the cumulative effect is a progressively straighter smile — without a single bracket or wire in sight.

For most adults, the removable nature of the trays is the biggest draw. You take them out to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush and floss. There are no food restrictions, no awkward interdental brushes to navigate around metal work, and nothing fixed to your teeth. That flexibility makes a real difference to daily life.

At The Grove Dental, we use Clear Aligners combined with Dental Monitoring technology, which allows us to track your progress remotely between appointments. That means fewer in-chair visits without compromising results — and in many cases it actually speeds up treatment.

What does Dental Monitoring involve?

Dental Monitoring is a remote tracking system where you use a small cheek retractor and your smartphone to take weekly scans of your teeth. Those scans go directly to me so I can check your progress and flag anything that needs attention — all without you needing to come in for every single review. I genuinely love this technology because it gives us a level of oversight that just wasn’t possible even five years ago, and patients love the convenience of it.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Clear Aligners?

Can clear aligners fix my specific problem?

Clear aligners are highly effective for a wide range of concerns: crowding, spacing, mild to moderate bite issues, and teeth that have shifted over time — which is extremely common in adults who had orthodontic treatment as teenagers and didn’t wear their retainers consistently. (No judgement — I hear this story every week.)

That said, they do have limits. Very complex bite problems or significant skeletal discrepancies may need a different approach, and I’ll always be upfront with you about that from the start. The best way to find out whether you’re a candidate is to come in for a free initial consultation. I’ll assess your teeth, talk through your goals, and give you an honest picture of what’s achievable.

One thing I want to be clear about: being an adult does not disqualify you. Adult teeth can move beautifully with the right treatment plan and consistent wear. I’ve seen genuinely transformative results in patients who never thought orthodontic treatment was still an option for them.

What if I had braces when I was younger?

This is one of the most common situations I see. Many adults had braces as teenagers, experienced some relapse over the years, and now want to address the shifting that’s happened since. Clear aligners are often an excellent solution for this exact scenario because the movements required are typically more moderate, which can mean a shorter treatment time and a more straightforward process overall.

How Long Does Clear Aligner Treatment Take?

What’s a realistic timeframe for adults?

Treatment length varies depending on the complexity of your case. For mild to moderate concerns, treatment can be as short as six to twelve months. More complex cases can take eighteen months or longer. During your consultation, I’ll be able to give you a much more specific estimate based on what I see.

What I find helps patients most is understanding the timeline upfront, so there are no surprises partway through. We map everything out from the beginning — including a 3D preview of your projected result — so you can see where you’re headed before you commit to a single tray.

With Dental Monitoring in place, we can also catch any issues early and make adjustments that keep your treatment on track. In my experience, patients who wear their aligners consistently (the recommendation is 20 to 22 hours per day) achieve results close to or ahead of the projected timeline.

What’s Included in Clear Aligner Treatment at The Grove Dental?

What does the investment cover?

Our Clear Aligner treatment at The Grove Dental includes your smile assessment, a 3D digital preview of your expected outcome, all your aligner trays, all review appointments throughout treatment, and complimentary retainers at the end. Retainers are genuinely important — they’re what keeps your result stable long-term — so I’m glad we include them as standard rather than treating them as an afterthought.

The investment varies depending on the complexity of your case and the length of treatment. For a breakdown of current fees, download our New Patient Guide. We also offer payment plans through Zip, Afterpay, and Humm, so there are flexible ways to spread the cost if that’s helpful. You can find out more on our payment options page.

Your initial consultation is completely complimentary — no commitment required. A lot of patients come in simply wanting to understand their options, and I think that’s exactly the right way to approach it.

Questions I Get Asked Most

Do clear aligners hurt?

Most patients notice some pressure when they first put in a new tray, particularly in the first day or two of each new set. It’s a sign the aligners are doing their job. The discomfort is generally much milder than what patients report with traditional braces, and it typically settles quickly. Over-the-counter pain relief can help in the first day or two if needed.

Will anyone be able to tell I’m wearing them?

Clear aligners are designed to be discreet. Most people won’t notice them unless they’re looking very closely. Some patients do have small tooth-coloured attachments placed on certain teeth to help with more complex movements — these are subtle, but worth knowing about. I’ll explain upfront whether attachments are part of your plan.

What happens if I lose or damage an aligner?

It does happen occasionally. The best approach is to contact us as soon as possible so we can advise whether to move forward to the next tray or order a replacement. Don’t panic — it’s manageable. We’ll talk through the right course of action based on where you are in your treatment.

Can I whiten my teeth while doing clear aligner treatment?

Some patients do ask about this. The removable nature of aligners actually makes teeth whitening very convenient — there are options we can discuss that work alongside your treatment. I’d recommend chatting to me about timing so we sequence things in a way that gives you the best outcome.

Is the free consultation really free? What does it involve?

Yes, genuinely free — no obligation and no pressure. We’ll take a look at your teeth, talk through your concerns and goals, and I’ll give you an honest assessment of whether clear aligners are the right fit. If they are, we’ll go through the process, timeline, and investment in detail. If another approach would serve you better, I’ll tell you that too.

Are clear aligners covered by private health insurance?

Orthodontic treatment is covered under some extras policies, but the level of cover varies significantly between funds and individual policies. I’d recommend checking with your fund directly before your appointment. We have HICAPS on-site, so any eligible benefit can be claimed on the spot.

What happens after treatment finishes?

Retention is everything. Once your active treatment is complete, you’ll need to wear retainers to keep your teeth in their new position. We include complimentary retainers as part of your treatment at The Grove Dental. Retainer wear is usually nightly at first, then reduces over time — and it’s the part of the process I’d encourage every patient to take seriously, because it’s what protects the result you’ve worked for.

Ready to Find Out If Clear Aligners Are Right for You?

If you’ve been sitting on this question for a while, I’d really encourage you to come in for a chat. Your initial Clear Aligner consultation is completely complimentary, and there’s no obligation to proceed. We’ll look at your teeth, talk through what’s possible, and give you a clear picture of the process, timeline, and investment — so you can make the decision that’s right for you.

Spring is a genuinely great time to start, especially if you have events or milestones on the horizon in the next twelve months. The sooner you begin, the sooner you’ll be wearing your final result.
