Postoperative Care – Veneers

Congratulations on your beautiful new smile! Proper care is key to the success and longevity of your veneers.

Immediately Post-Insertion – First 48 Hours

1. Do not eat or bite into anything any crunchy, chewy, sticky, hard or tough (e.g. apples, nuts, toffee, candy, gum, steak, ice cubes etc). Eat a soft food diet only (e.g. rice, pasta, soup). Eating hard or crunchy food immediately post-insertion may fracture the veneer or underlying tooth/bond before it fully sets and cause your veneers to fall off.

2. Take extra precaution when eating by using a knife & fork to cut up your food (rather than biting into it) and use the opposite side of your mouth to chew whenever possible.

3. Brush VERY gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush, focusing on a gentle yet thorough massage at the gum line. Use a salt-water rinse for the next three days. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of salt into a mug of warm water and gently rinse the solution between the teeth. Repeat this rinse two to three times daily.

4. Do not floss between your new veneers for the first two days – this will ensure the bond has enough time to set and not be flicked off accidentally.

5. Some hot or cold sensitivity or tenderness of the gums is normal after veneer insertion – this may last a few days or weeks. You can take Panadol for pain management as directed on the label.

Long Term Maintenance

1. Brush gently with a soft-bristled electric toothbrush twice a day, for at least two minutes. Floss carefully at least once a day. Any plaque or bacteria left at your gumline may lead to decay of your natural tooth which would cause your veneer to fail.

2. Visit our practice for a comprehensive examination and clean every six months (or as directed) so that we can maintain the health and longevity of your veneers, teeth and gums. This is a requirement to maintain your warranty.

3. Don’t use your teeth to chew or bite into hard objects (e.g. ice cubes, pens, fingernails) and don’t use them as tools (e.g. opening bottles). Cutting food with a knife & fork before eating is recommended.

4. Avoid smoking & vaping and staining substances like coffee, tea and red wine.

5. Wear your night guard (occlusal splint) every night to protect against the effects of grinding and clenching – not doing so will void your warranty. You will need to bring your splint in for assessment at every appointment.
