Postoperative Care – Take-home Whitening
Congratulations and Welcome to our Free Whitening For Life Loyalty Program, through the purchase of a take-home whitening kit. Simply attend your maintenance cleans at The Grove Dental every 4-6 months (or as directed) and we will give you free whitening gel top-ups at every clean appointment for the rest of your life!
Your custom whitening trays and professionally supplied gel allow you to whiten your teeth at home using a plan selected for you by your dental team.
For a comfortable and consistent result, use only the product and wear time prescribed for you. Do not increase the amount of gel, treatment frequency or wear time in an attempt to whiten faster.
A complete guide to our Loyalty Program, including the full terms and conditions has been emailed to you separately.
Before each whitening session
1. Brush and floss your teeth using fluoride toothpaste.
2. Make sure your whitening trays are clean and dry.
3. Allow refrigerated gel to return to room temperature before use.
4. Check the product name and prescribed wear time, as different whitening gels require different instructions.
How to use your whitening trays
Please refer to the email or printed booklet you received at the time of purchase. This will contain a step-by-step guide on how to use your whitening trays safely and the durations of treatment based on the type of whitening gel you have been given.
Looking after your trays and gel
- Keep the trays in their protective case when they are not in use.
- Keep them away from pets, children, direct sunlight and heat.
- Store the whitening gel in a cool place, away from direct sunlight, and follow the storage directions on its label. Do not use expired gel.
- Do not share your trays or whitening gel with anyone else.
- Bring your trays to your dental appointments if the fit has changed or you would like us to check their condition.
Sensitivity
Temporary sensitivity to hot or cold is the most common side effect of whitening. If sensitivity develops:
1. Stop whitening for one or two days, or reduce the wear time or frequency as advised by your dental team.
2. Use sensitivity toothpaste with a soft toothbrush.
3. Avoid very hot, cold, acidic or carbonated food and drinks until the sensitivity settles.
4. Restart only when comfortable and follow the adjusted plan recommended for you.
Please stop treatment and contact us if sensitivity is severe, is worsening, wakes you at night or persists after you stop whitening.
Gum irritation
Red, pale, burning or tender gums usually mean that too much gel has contacted the soft tissues or that the tray is not fitting correctly.
Remove the trays, rinse your mouth and stop whitening until the irritation has settled. Use less gel when you restart. If irritation persists or returns, contact us so we can check the trays and your technique.
Food, drinks and smoking
Do not smoke during treatment and wait at least two hours after each whitening session. To help maintain your result, limit smoking and strongly coloured food and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, curry, berries and tomato-based sauces. We recommend avoiding these for 48 hours after completing your initial treatment course.
Important precautions
- Use whitening gel only under the supervision of your dental team.
- Keep the gel away from children and pets.
- Do not use the gel if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Natural teeth can whiten, but fillings, crowns, bridges and veneers will not change colour.
- Do not continue whitening if you develop an unusual reaction.
If gel enters your eyes, hold the eyelids apart and rinse continuously with running water for at least 15 minutes. If more than a small trace is swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Rinse your mouth and contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 for advice. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or are severe.
Keeping your White Teeth For Life membership active
To remain enrolled and receive your complimentary whitening top-up, attend your maintenance check-up and clean every 4 to 6 months, or at the interval recommended by your dental professional.
Your top-up gel is provided at these appointments while you remain eligible for the program. Only use it at the frequency recommended for you. Many patients require a top-up every 6 to 12 months, but your needs may differ depending on your diet, oral health, smoking status and previous sensitivity.
The current White Teeth For Life terms and conditions on The Grove Dental website apply.
